roleplaying

Description
Roleplaying (which is what the 'RP' in 'RPG' stands for) is the act of placing yourself in your character's shoes and behaving as they would behave. Partially this is how you communicate with others; partially it is your actions. Simply put, it is up to you to choose a personality for your character and then convey that personality to others in the game world. That personality might be very similar to your own, but then again it might not. The choice is yours. Oftentime roleplaying means doing what is not the most prudent course of action for your character: for example, a wily pickpocket with a bad case of cleptomania might find themselves trying to steal an especially shiny bauble from a sleeping dragon, even though you as the player know that they will probably get caught.

Roleplaying also means trying to phrase your communication with other characters in a way that makes sense in terms of the game world. For example, greeting someone with 'hey dude, wassup? this mud rox.' would not be considered roleplaying, as it references out-of-character (sometimes abbreviated as OOC) concepts. A better greeting might be, 'Greetings, traveler. Have you found the city of Ravenfall to your taste?' We've worked very hard to try to create some mood with the guilds, areas, and equipment in the game, but lots of overtly OOC conversation may put a damper on that.

The policy on roleplaying here is simple: it is encouraged, but not enforced. No one will force you to roleplay. However, let us just say this: those that visibly add to the game by playing their character in a way that adds to the game's mood may find themselves mysteriously rewarded. Those that make no effort to maintain the mood may find themselves having a harder time of things than their comrades. In other words, the more you contribute to the game, the more it will give back to you.
